Things to Consider When Buying Par Lights

Par spot lights are usually very portable and therefore convenient to work with. If you’re in the market for these types of lights, you’ll need to know exactly what you need before you start shopping. Par lights come in a wide range of sizes and types, but as a whole, they are not difficult lights to shop for. Par lights are a lot alike in some ways, so you’ll need to take a look at the various features that make them different to decide which one is right for you.

Below are some of the things to look at whenever you’re shopping for par spot lights:

Power Options

Par lights that can run off of both AC and DC power mean that you’ll get a versatile, flexible light that you can work with whether you’re indoors or outdoors. With most of these lights, you get AC power that includes 100- to 240-volt input capability and DC power that includes 12-volt input via XLR. Most par lights have these two options, of course, but you’ll still need to check and make sure.

Weight and Size

This might sound immaterial, but you want a par light that is both lightweight and small. You don’t want too small, of course, but small enough so that it isn’t cumbersome or difficult to work with. Many par lights weigh one pound or less, so they are easy to maneuver and adjust, and this usually makes them less expensive as well. You’ll be grateful that you made this choice the first time that you adjust or change the location of your par light.

Par lights are made sturdy, but if you get one that is corrosion- and impact-resistant, has a continuous molded-in hinge, and even has an IP67 rating -- which states that it is waterproof -- that is even better. People drop stage lights all the time, and you definitely want one that can take a certain amount of abuse and keep on going. This is especially important when you have a large crew or you’re on the road frequently.

Much as with other stage lighting, par lights come in many different price ranges, but as a general rule, they run from around $600 to roughly $8000. That’s quite a wide range, but it’s good news because it means that all facilities can find something to accommodate their needs regardless of their budget, and this is always a good thing. It also allows you to get just what you need regardless of how much money you have to spend.
