Things to Consider When Buying Video Switchers

A good switcher is necessary for video productions because it essentially brings everything together and allows you to control all of your special effects with one device. Switchers can look complex with all of their buttons and knobs, but they aren’t that difficult to learn how to use. Nevertheless, you do need to know exactly what you’ll be using it for beforehand so that you can find the right one for your needs.

If you aren’t sure what to look for in a video switcher, below are some features to seriously consider when you start doing your research.

Weight and Size

Video switchers can come in lots of sizes, and there are even some “mini” switchers that are particularly small. While a lightweight, small switcher is easier to maneuver and transport from one location to another, they still have a lot of the same features as the bigger switchers do, so there’s no need to worry about losing conveniences just because you go with something smaller.

Is it Software-Compatible?

With video switchers, it’s a good idea to make sure that it comes with the software you need to operate it or it will operate with the software you already have. You certainly don’t want to have to run out and buy expensive software just to operate your new switcher. Most reputable companies make video switchers that are compatible with software such as DaVinci Resolve, Fusion, and several others, which means you can start using the switcher immediately.

While price should never be your number one concern, you’re likely on a budget and need to at least consider this feature. Because there are so many types available, video switchers range from under $300 to roughly $10,000. But again, not to worry because most houses of worship and small businesses find their needs are met with a switcher that costs a few thousand dollars or less.

While you should always check out the manufacturer of the switcher you’ve chosen to buy, the good news is that most of them come with excellent reputations and therefore make high-quality, high-tech switchers that are both sturdy and dependable. Some of these brands include Blackmagic DesignTelestream WirecastEpiphanRoland, and RGBLink, to name a few. It’s easy to research them online since most of them have up-to-date websites, and once you determine which features you need and how much money you have to spend, the rest of the process should be a breeze.
